In the ‘Killer-Cult’ series on ‘Crime and Investigation’ channel, the producers painted a horrific but realistic picture on notorious cult-leaders such as Jim Jones, and David Koresh.
Jones, leader of the People’s Temple, eventually incited over 900 people to commit mass suicide. As the psychopath Jones, ‘David’ Koresh, leader of the Branch Dravidian, also tortured his followers psychologically, physically, sexually, and spiritually, and ended by killing himself, 53 adults, and 21 children.
Watching the atrocities of these charismatic leaders who seemed so sincere in the beginning, one cannot help but wonder how a man - a mere human being - could lead so many people into such great error; claiming their finances and wives, raping their daughters and even their sons, destroying their families and souls; eventually, robbing them of their mortal lives, and their eternal salvation.
People generally underestimate the satanic power of personal charisma and the blatant abuse of God-given Scripture. Exploiting the human need for love, acceptance, and company, all cultic leaders bring their followers some ‘Biblical revelation,’ and make them believe they are ‘special,’ ‘chosen,’ and that they have ALL truth. They abuse and control their victims with false prophecies and their false interpretation of the Bible. Often, they change their names and assume a Biblical alias such as ‘David.’ [Speaking of which, let us not forget the ‘visionary’ father of the cell-church system, ‘David’ Yonggi Cho!] Cult-leaders always see themselves as God’s ‘anointed’ leaders and ‘final’ prophets – mostly, this false perception of leadership eventually grows into the delusion that they themselves are god! As such, they demand unconditional obedience and total submission to their ‘final authority,’ and place themselves above questioning and accountability.
It is amazing how many Scriptures one will find to back ANY false doctrine, but Ps. 119:160 clearly states, "The ENTIRETY of Your Word is truth."
One thing is certain, Satan does indeed ‘come to steal [God’s truth, His Word, (Mark 4:3-20,)] kill, [the soul and body, Mt. 10:28,] and destroy, [everything Godly and good, Gal. 1:3.]’ While our Lord Jesus Christ came so that we ‘may have life, and have it more abundantly,’ it remains a fact that none of us is above deception and error, as none of us fallible humans has all the answers. There was only ONE perfect human being Who knew and understood everything: the Man Jesus Christ.
Thus, God made us part of Jesus’ body, where we can minister to ONE ANOTHER, and keep ONE ANOTHER accountable, safe, and healthy, (1 Pt. 3:15; Tit. 1:13, Jam. 5:16.) To this effect Paul wrote to Timothy, “Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord… Be… a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth,’ [because] ‘ALL Scripture, [the entire context of the Word] is given by inspiration, [not dictation] of God, and is profitable for… reproof, correction, for instruction in righteousness.’ – 2 Tim. 2:14-16; 3:16.
Cults and cultic practices do not always end in mass murder or -suicide. They do, however, always rob believers of their personal relationship with God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ, in the power of His Holy Spirit. Most often, members of such systems do not realize that the thief had robbed them of their salvation, as the unchanging Word of the Lord Jesus Christ stated in Jn. 4:21-24, ‘God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in SPIRIT and TRUTH.’ To teach us His Truth, the Father sent the Holy Spirit to guide us into ALL Truth. If we reject the truth, we reject the Spirit of Truth.
How will we know what is Truth? If we truly desire God’s truth and ask the Father for truth, He will NEVER give us deception. Our heavenly Father will never ‘give us a stone when we ask for bread or a poisonous snake when we ask for fish,’ (Mt. 7:9.) Jesus also promised in Jn. 7:17 that DOERS of God’s will shall know the truth! The S.F. Bible comments, ‘The teachings and claims of Jesus will be accepted by those who are intent on doing God’s will!’
From the context of God’s Word it is clear that no one can be deceived unless we are disobedient to God’s contextual Word. Unless we choose to believe the lie. Unless we believe false teaching, refuse to ‘grow in knowledge and in grace,’ and most importantly, when we submit to false spiritual authority. – Mt. 7:13-29.
Paul explained in 2 Ths. 2:9-12, ‘The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who PERISH, because they did not receive the LOVE of the truth, that they might be saved…’
Cult-members all had to willfully decide to follow that leader and his system, ‘and for this reason God sent them STRONG DELUSION, that they should believe the lie.’
Make no mistake - cult-members are sincere in their beliefs. They are under STRONG delusion. Most can recite nearly the entire Bible, yet they remain sincerely deceived, because, if you are a Jehovah's Witness, you study the Bible from an entirely different perspective and focus on false leaders, teachers and prophets such as Charles Russell and Joseph Rutherford – among other things. If you are a Catholic, you focus on Mary and the pope, and so on.
If you are a Seventh Day Adventist, you focus mainly on an unbiblical view of the Sabbath and the teachings of false prophets like Ellen White. [Search the web for: ‘The [Sabbath] Seal of God,’ ‘Seventh-Day Adventist Deception,’ etc,]
If you are an Old- or New Apostle, you focus on the ‘mouth of the apostle,’ not the truth of Scripture, and Biblical facts such as Jesus’ resurrection and return, heaven and hell, become merely a ‘state of mind.’ If you are a Lutheran or Calvinist, you cling to the doctrine of Predestination, Baptismal Regeneration, and so forth. If you are an Oneness Pentecostal, you focus on the Name of ‘Jesus Only,’ and deny the Personhood of the Father and the Holy Spirit. If you are a Baptist, you ignore most of the powerful gifts of the Holy Spirit. If you are a Pentecostal or Charismatic, you believe that ‘Old Testament tithing buys or earns the blessing of God; tongues, (which is one of the gifts or signs of the Spirit, Mark 16:16:18; 1 Cor. 14:22,) are the ‘evidence’ of the baptism ‘in’ the Holy Spirit - ‘slain in the spirit’ is a Biblical miracle,’ et cetera.
